Family AffairA Family Affair

Mr. Henderson’s work appears in Gil Robertson IV’s book Family Affair: African-American Identity in the 21st Century

Simply put, Family Affair answers the question, "What does it means to be black in America today?" Through personal stories and essays—from Pulitzer Prize winning Angelo Henderson as well as about 75 other prominent African Americans including entertainers and actors Isaiah Washington, Victoria Rowell, Las Alonso, Ruby Dee, Isaac Hayes, Malcolm Jamal Warner; business gurus Cathy Hughes, Max Siegel; prominent pastors Dr. Otis Moss and Bishop Paul Morton; as well as politicians including U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson, Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker - Family Affair cleaves through the physical, social, political and historical characteristics that have come to define the African American community in the 21st century.

It's no secret that the African American community is in crisis. From health disparities, political injustice, crime statistics, and a plethora of social ills, it is a community that is teetering on the edge. The fundamental reasons for this dysfunction stems from an identity that’s been thrown off course due to a number of external and internal factors. Family Affair will address this imbalance, offering revelations and insights on issues and topics that the majority of African Americans only talk about in secret. The goal: to stimulate dialogue that supports reflection, healing and understanding.

Family Affair is divided into five sections representing the key features that influence the African American identity: History, Politics, Behavior, Beliefs and Self-evaluation. The book will feature a wide cross-section of contributors representing various elements of the black community and each essay will average between 1500 words and 3500 words in length. One original poem will thematically lead off each chapter. The sections will also feature a minimum of one religious leader and one institutional leader, as well as many celebrities from the worlds of music and broadcasting, and ordinary people with extraordinary stories.
